Psalms 81, 88, 92 – 93

Thursday

So I wanted to focus today on Psalm 88. This has to be one of the most depressing psalms. Why would we even bother reading it?

You can hear the psalmist crying out to God for the situation they have found themselves in. I can almost imagine someone at the end of their days, when health and strength have left them. Their closest friends have all departed. They can’t see well anymore and everything just seems dark and dreary. Maybe you can relate to this feeling of despair? Remember before when I mentioned that psalms speak to our emotions? Well this is one of those. No holds barred, nothing is held back and the writer just lets God know, I am miserable. So where is the good news? Support groups have often been a great source for help to people in trouble. I feel like this psalm is similar in helping us to realize that no matter how bad I might feel, someone else has felt the same way. If this was all there is to life, well, there wouldn’t be much use in going on would there? But did you notice that in verse 13, they are still praying, as bad as the situation is, we can always pray. As bad as the world might be, God is still there for you to talk to, to share your problems with. I think this psalm is included in the bible, because God never tries to gloss over our lives but rather puts the truth out there for all to see. God wants us to come to him in our despair. I thank God that He understands our every emotion, I hope you do to.

Blessings
