Psalms 119:89-176

Thursday

Our reading today is the second part of Psalm 119. Remember before I mentioned that this psalm is all about the reading and studying and memorizing the word of God. How many different words can you find in this psalm that talk about God’s Word?

It is called statues, laws and judgments, as well as commandments, precepts, testimonies, and of course; word. I find myself singing verse 105 as I come to it. What a beautiful image this presents to us. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” With God’s word before us, behind us and within us we need never stumble in the dark. We never have to wander off of His path. By reading God’s word, you are letting God know how important learning and studying His Word is to you. Think about the time when Jesus is tempted in the wilderness by Satan, how does he respond to him? By quoting scripture. What does Matthew 4:4 tell us? “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” These are the words of Jesus. I think if Jesus says that it is important to know your scripture, to know the word of God, to meditate on it, then I feel it is not only important for us, but it is essential.
