John 13

Monday

It’s a matter of choice. Our salvation, our eternal life depends on the choices we make.

Jesus takes his twelve disciples into a private room where the Passover feast would be held. Jesus is going to show the disciples the “full extent of his love”. Even Judas.

Did you notice that Judas is still with them when Jesus washes the disciple’s feet?  We often focus in on what Peter has to say, and that is a good message, but have you ever wondered what Judas must have been thinking as he watched Jesus wash his feet. Was he having second thoughts, would he turn from the course of action he had already planned out with the High Priest? Did he feel any remorse – or was he just thinking – Hey Jesus, let’s just get on with the rest of the night? We don’t know what he was thinking, scripture never says. But I think that Judas still had the opportunity to make the right choice. Jesus could have been arrested and brought to trial without the help of Judas. The guards knew who he was. Judas had a choice.

We always have a choice. But Judas’ choice will bring him only sorrow and shame.

Peter will choose in a few hours to deny knowing Jesus.  His choice will bring him sorrow and shame… I imagine that the other disciples felt sadness over their actions.

Being a follower of Jesus in not always easy. Sometimes we have to be willing to put ourselves in the line of fire. Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions.

I believe that Jesus loved both Judas and Peter. They both made mistakes, but the difference is that Peter was willing to be forgiven and restored. Judas was too full of pride and self-loathing.

What choice(s) are there? Well, the greatest one has eternal ramifications. Are you going to believe in Jesus as you Lord and Savior?

And, of course, there are also other choices that can affect our lives. Who do I marry? What will I do for a living? Do I have children? And the list goes on and on. Some can have a serious effect on me and others.  Do I drive after having too much to drink?  So the choice is always before us.
