Deuteronomy 8 – 10

(Sunday)

Moses is assuring the Israelites in this passage that even though the enemy is great (Anakites – giants!) that God will go before them “like a devouring fire” (9:3). There is nothing to fear, when God is for us.

As Paul the apostle said in Romans 8:31, “if God is for us, who can be against us.” Oh, but there is a danger in having things going too well for us. The danger is that we become complacent and even start to think that we don’t need God, that we can do things on our own. We forget what God has done for us. It is quite possible that we even find ourselves ignoring God and thinking that it is because of our righteousness that we have been so blessed. (9:4).

Moses in this exhortation warns the people to never forget who goes before us. Remain humble and remember that our response should be, must be… to give God all the glory, all the credit. “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” (1 Cor 1:31 NRSV)

On a totally different note, I read in my commentary that Deut. 8:10 is most likely the reason we say “grace” before we eat.

Blessings on the day!
