2 Samuel 8 – 9; 1 Chronicles 18

Tuesday

David remembers his promise to Jonathan. Do you remember what it was?

David and Jonathan had been such good friends Jonathan had defied his father, Saul to help David escape (1 Samuel 19). When David heard of his friend’s death he remembered his friendship and swore an oath to care for any of Jonathan’s descendants. In our reading today, David remembers his promise and asks if there is anyone left from the house of Saul that David could show kindness to. He learns of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, who was crippled and invites him to eat at his table, and he also restores all that had belonged to Mephibosheth’s grandfather. When you make a promise, it is good to remember that promise and keep it.

David’s kindness and mercy goes way beyond what any normal king would have done. Generally, the children of the former king are assassinated to make sure there is no one left who might try to regain control of the kingdom. But not so with David, which goes to show why God said of David “he is a man after God’s own heart.”

David was a great leader and a great example of what it means to show love and kindness to others.

Blessings on the day
