1 Samuel 9 – 12

(Sunday)

Do you ever wonder why we always seem to want what we shouldn’t have, or don’t need? Like for example, I would much rather have a chocolate brownie ice cream smothered with caramel syrup than a bowl of fruit. Why is that? Why do my taste buds seek out that which will cause me more harm than good? Well, in our reading today, the Israelites are crying out for a king. Something God said they didn’t need and will only bring them hardship. God should be the only King we need.

So Samuel tells God what the people want and God agrees to give them a king. Saul is the one God chose. He is tall and handsome and seems to be quite humble. I think his encounter with Samuel (very nicely arranged – coincidence? – hardly.) must have blown him away. He seems like an unlikely candidate for kingship, “I’m from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest in Israel, and my family is the least important of all the families of the tribe! You must have the wrong man!”

Sound familiar? God always seems to use the least, the weakest for His purposes. When Jesus says the last shall be first – he means it.

Everything God does is contrary to how man thinks and acts. Why? Because then you know that it is God at work.

Look around you today, where have you seen God working?

Blessings
