Genealogies, really… I have such a hard time reading those names. Do you? So here’s a little trick I started doing with my husband Brad. We listen to the bible on line at Biblegateway.com. I just read along and let him pronounce the names – Ha! Now I can focus on the person. Each name represents someone who was precious to God. Even those who did not follow Him, God still loved them. Each tribe we read of was important to God because we can recognize this sense that God wants us to live in families, in community. Each name that we read also connects for us another piece of God’s plan for the promised salvation through the lineage of David. As the names are read – I start to think of their stories, stories that we have read about Noah and Esau and Judah, did you catch the name of Boaz and think of the story of Ruth? Did you see that David is the great-grandson of Ruth and Boaz? What if Ruth had not gone to Israel with Naomi? No David? No Jesus? Hmmm?
