Revelation 18

Instead of commenting on the text, I decided to jot down a few questions I am asking and observations.   Generally, the search for the answers is where lessons are learned.
1.  why would the Lord say “come out of her, my people” if the saints were already gone?   Maybe Christians are here until after the sixth bowl.
2.  The idea of paying back double works both ways.  In fact, I think I remember that God promises 100 fold return for any kind deed we do.   The idea that I will receive back twice as much evil as I send out is a helpful deterrent.
3.  vs 7 adds to that last thought.  Any luxury and glory I give to myself will be returned to me as torment.   That reminds me of James 5:5 “you have fattened yourselves on the day of slaughter”.
4.  vs 7 and 8.  Pride goes before a fall.  “you fool, this very night your life will be required of you”.   Store up for yourselves treasures where thieves do not break in and destroy…
5.  from vs 8 to 21 several things stand out.  The destruction happens quickly.  The phrase “one hour” is repeated often.  Since this happens as a part of battle, I wonder if it’s a nuclear strike.  If it were a meteor (as happens other times) I think that would have been mentioned as being caused by God, rather than this which seems to be “allowed” by God.    There are two groups of people mentioned: the wealthy of earth who are crying and filled with despair, and the righteous who are praising God.   I guess our emotions will follow the desires of our heart.   Thinking of that, I wonder if I have any unhealthy attachments to “things” that would cause me to mourn if I lost them.
6.  Wait!   vs 21.   Did I just see an angel throwing a large meteor from heaven?   Is that how the city will be destroyed in one hour?   It would certainly make sense.
7.  vs 21-24    You led people astray with false teachings,  you killed and persecuted God’s people.   No good thing will ever be found in you again.  “Never again” is repeated six times.
8.  The blood of a righteous person that is shed by those who are wicked will cry out from the ground until God is satisfied.   The persecution and murder of the righteous will not go unanswered.   I am reminded of Genesis 4:10  “Listen!  your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground”
9.  Life is in the blood and life comes from God.  Blood is significant (integral) to the salvation story.  Blood should never be spilled carelessly…there will be an accounting.
