Proverbs 16 – 18

Thursday

How many times have we wondered if we are heading in the right direction? Ok, as a directionally challenged individual, I sometimes find myself heading in the wrong direction.

This sometimes can end in having to go in a round-about way to get to where I need to be. I find that sometimes the same thing can occur in my spiritual life as well. I think I know where I should be going, but like Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.” Very profound statement. We might think we are doing the right thing, but are we? We forget that the path to life is not always the obvious one. We can delude ourselves into thinking that we are “good” people.

A few months back, I went to the funeral of a “good” person. But being “good” doesn’t guarantee their entrance into heaven. Just because we do the “right” things, ie.  don’t cheat, or lie, or hurt, etc – we might think that all is well between us and God. But doing the “right” thing (as is required) is not the path that will lead to eternal life with Jesus.

We must overcome our infinite capacity for self-deception. Oh, it isn’t wrong to dabble in the paranormal, it’s just fun, its harmless. What does the bible tell us about mediums and fortunetellers and spiritualist? “Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 19:31. Pretty straight forward, I don’t see where there is any wiggle room with this command, yet we seem to think it’s alright to play with ouija boards, and tarot cards and read horoscopes. And then laugh at the outcomes. There is little different with playing around with the paranormal than many other sins in our lives, it starts out little, harmless, but somehow it begins to overwhelm us, and we find ourselves in too deep.

So don’t deceive yourself into thinking that a little sin is harmless. Let’s face it, sin is sin. Whatever separates you from God. Seeking other spirits, besides God, the Holy Spirit, is separating you from God.

“We can make our plans” Proverbs 16:9 says, “but the Lord determines our steps.” Since the path God wants you to follow is laid out before you, isn’t better to get on His path, the path that will lead to eternal salvation, than the one that leads to destruction.
