Numbers 1 – 2

(Tuesday)

Well, here we are the beginning of a new book of the bible. Lots of talk about counting people and organizing the way the “camp” would move. There is a whole lot of logistics going on here. I was trying to wrap my head around the number of people who would be traveling together. The total number of the census for each tribe (not counting the Levites) was over 600,000 – and remember this is only counting the men 20 years and older, there would also be women and children in the total number.

This got me to trying to imagine the biggest crowds I’ve ever been in. I was at a football game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and it is a little daunting to say the least, being in a crowd of over 67,000. Now multiply that by 10. Do you know that in all of Erie county there is only 280,000 people. You’d have to go to Allegheny County where Pittsburgh is to find the number of people in the Israelite camp. Allegheny reports 1.2 million men and women.

But I hope you also noticed that God has a plan for moving that many people and as long as everyone follows the plan, they will be able to move and set up camp where God leads them. And God will lead them.

God always has a plan. Our role is to follow that plan. My hope for today is to be aware of the plan God has for me and to be obedient to following it – I hope you will too.

Blessings
