God isn’t only observing what you do, He’s considering how you think, and what is motivating you. It’s all part of one larger picture.
The number of sermons based on Chapter 6 is likely unlimited. Most of them would begin with a topic, such as “The right way to pray” or “Don’t be Greedy”. Recently however I am considering a different perspective. Instead of looking at the parts, I am observing the whole. Never mind prayer specifically, or giving or possessions. What do all of these things have in common? What is the common theme throughout the passage?
It seems to me that verses 1-19 are warning us against serving with false motives. By that I mean “other than Christian motives”. There’s nothing wrong with doing something kind for another person, or allowing someone to see you helping or giving, hoping that will stimulate some benevolence in return. For instance, most large companies give philanthropically, partly in hope that their patrons and workers will feel better about them and their products, and will favor them with additional purchases. That’s how life works, you do something nice, you announce it and people can respond.
Jesus is simply saying “that’s not how the Kingdom works”. You won’t garner credit with God if you are trying to win praise and recognition from people, because if you are trying to win praise from people, your heart isn’t in the right place, and your service is invalidated based on that, not on the fact someone praised you for what you did. You were only serving, giving, praying to be seen, and that motivation invalidates the gift.
I think that’s what Jesus is saying beginning in verse 19. Treasure on earth is the praise of others, the comforts and recognition that money and prestige bring. But those things fade. You’re crazy to hope they will pay off as long term investments, because they won’t make it into eternity. Far better to spend your time making wise investments spiritually, which is accomplished through obedience to God, without the desire for recognition. If someone recognizes, that’s okay….it wasn’t what you were seeking. That’s the point.
Don’t focus on worldly things and expect spiritual dividends.
Being generous quietly, behind the scenes, or by placing your tithe into the offering plate without pomp and circumstance may not bring much attention now, but it does not go unnoticed by God.
Have you decided to forgive when you had a right to be angry? That’s a spiritual investment. Have you chosen to help someone grow spiritually, even though it was inconvenient for you? Another spiritual investment.
We can choose to be focus on here and receive recognition here, or we can focus on heaven and receive rewards there. But you can’t do both.
