Matthew 28

Wednesday,

I think we find in our reading today the most profound statement ever uttered in the Gospel.

When the angel says, “He is not here; he has risen,” all of our lives are profoundly changed. Think about the difference this one statement has made in our lives. His birth, His life, His death, the lessons He taught, the temptations He withstood, the miracles Jesus performed, were all so very important, but none of it would have meant anything if not for this one incredible event – death has been conquered, evil has been defeated. Salvation is made available for all who believe.

Think about the difference this event has made in your life. Would your life be any different if Jesus hadn’t risen from the dead? Where would you be if Christ had not been victorious?

Jesus is alive and the difference is experienced because of the Holy Spirit living in us.  You might remember that Jesus told his disciples, “But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)

Yes, we needed a pure, sinless sacrifice, but we also needed for the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and fill us, and this wouldn’t have happened if Jesus had not died and was resurrected.

The Law is no longer written on tablets of stone, but they are written on the hearts of every believer.  As the song “He’s Alive” says, “

Jesus is alive, I’m forgiven and the gates of Heaven are opened wide.” It really doesn’t get any better than that.

“He is not here; he has risen”. Praise God for those words, praise God for his love.
