Jeremiah 30-31

Tuesday

Jeremiah receives an uplifting word from God. There will be restoration.

Not just for Judah but for all of Israel. What a great word of hope this is for a hopeless people! A people who have alienated themselves from God because of their sins. People who broke their relationship with God. We heard so many times from Jeremiah the warnings to repent and change their ways, and how God is going to punish His people for their failure to follow His commands. For their failure to remain holy people. For their failure to keep God as their only God.
And yet, because of God’s love, his indescribable love for us, Jeremiah now tells us that God’s plans includes redemption.

It reminds me of a parent that has disciplined a disobedient child and is now embracing them and telling them they are forgiven.  And God will renew these people inwardly. He will make it possible for them to never stray from Him again.  God promises a “new covenant”. (31:31) The new covenant is not one of stone, but one that will be written on our hearts and put in our minds.  This is what Jesus shares with His disciples in the upper room. We also read about this new covenant in Hebrews 8 and in 1 Corinthians 11:25.  Jesus is the fulfillment of this new covenant.

This message of hope, is our message of hope. In a world which is so broken and people are so lost, from the appalling circumstances of the world we find ourselves living in; where right is wrong and what is wrong is now suddenly right, knowing that God gives us this shining vision of a future time when the new covenant will be fully realized; is nothing short of amazing grace, amazing love.
