Ezekiel 13-15

Wednesday

Have you ever had someone fix something with substandard materials hoping that a good coat of paint may make it look like new.

Well, that is the illustration that God spoke to Ezekiel about the false prophets. God is telling Ezekiel that false prophets are worse than no prophecy at all. We cannot use God’s name and proclaim something that is not true. For the prophets of Ezekiel’s time, they are trying to convince the people that God is not going to punish them and by doing so they give the people a false sense of hope. This will prove to be disastrous to the kings/leaders of Judah. (remember what happens to Zedekiah – he was warned not to fight against the Babylonians but to accept God’s punishment, he doesn’t and he pays a heavy price. 2 Kings 24:19-20 and Jeremiah 52:2-3)

Throughout the scriptures we hear time and time again warnings against false prophets, false teacher. People who declare they are speaking the Word of God when clearly they are not.

Ezekiel likens these prophets to be like jackals. Jackals, I have read, in their natural habitat could make a comfortable home for themselves among the ruins of a city. This metaphor points to the false prophets who prowl around the city and are at home in Israel’s disaster. They are exploiting events for their own benefit.

How is it that false prophecy is so easy to infiltrate our Christian lives? Because we only want to hear what is pleasing. We don’t like to be told that we are wrong, when we are and we don’t want to have to change bad behavior if we don’t have to. Sometimes as a pastor, it is hard for us to tell people that their lifestyle is not pleasing to God. It is easier to say, God loves everybody and we all sin. But the truth is, we must not whitewash sin and just sweep it under the rug and we must not water down the gospel. We need to share in love, but what we share must be the truth. Otherwise, the result may have eternal consequences. I feel a tremendous responsibility to share only the truth and I don’t take this responsibility lightly. God has chosen each of us to carry His message of salvation into the world and we must do so with truth and love.

Sharing God’s Word
