2 Samuel 16 -18

Wednesday

Yesterday, I talked about the power of the tongue. How it can be used to give advice, or build one another up, or tear someone down. There is a considerable amount of negative speech today. First Ziba lies to David about Mephibosheth’s loyalty. David just accepts Ziba’s statements without checking out the facts. Too many times we are quick to believe what someone tells us about somebody else. I think we relish in hearing negative news (even if it’s a lie) more so than hearing positive words spoken about someone else. Then David encounters Shimei who seems bent on cursing David for something that David never did, kill Saul. David refuses to engage in this conversation and just ignores the insults and false accusations. David’s son Absalom has two advisors give him conflicting advice. Fortunately for David Absalom chooses the wrong one to follow. Maybe it was because of how Hushai had flattered Absalom. We often can be swayed to do the wrong thing, because someone compliments us and we succumb to the praise.

Words, like I mentioned yesterday, play such an important part in our faith journey. Words are powerful tools to be used for good or evil. Be sure that the words you listen to are words of truth. How do you know what is true and what is false? Read your Bible, pray, listen to what the Holy Spirit is leading you to believe, find a trustworthy, godly counselor and listen to them.

Blessings on your day
