2 Kings 1-4

Sunday

Elijah is taken home to be with the Lord and Elisha is given a special gift.

When Elisha knew that Elijah was going to be taken home he boldly asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. I don’t know how many of us would have even thought to ask for something so precious, but then to ask for a double blessing. And God granted his request because he was sincere in wanting it and his motives were pure. When we ask things of God are our motives pure, are we asking for the right reasons.

So Elijah is the second person in scripture to be taken into heaven without dying. You might recall this also happened to Enoch (Gen 5:21-24).

I love how Elisha told the other prophets, don’t bother looking for him, but they had to see for themselves, I guess. Too often we can’t seem to believe without proof, which when you think about it, is really just a lack of faith. Faith is believing without seeing.

We are then give an example of the power of the Holy Spirit working in Elisha’s life when he cleans up the water that was bad.

Elisha then runs into a group of bad boys who were probably not wanting Elisha to speak against their pagan worship. They were being disrespectful of the man of God and because of it, they were punished. I think our nation will continue to suffer from the consequences of disrespecting others. I don’t think that many of the young people are being taught any better in today’s world about the importance of respecting people in authority; ie, teachers, pastors, policemen. If you can’t respect the individuals, you should at least respect the position that they hold in society. It seems like in our world today, if you disagree with someone then you must also hate them. That is just not true. I didn’t always like what my parents made me do, as a matter of fact I sometimes disagreed with them, but I always loved them and I always respected them and their opinion (even if I didn’t always listen).

Loving Christ
