1 Kings 17-19

Tuesday

At the end of our reading yesterday we are introduced to Ahab and as promised, we are going to see just how bad a ruler he is.

Ahab married Jezebel (a name synonymous with an evil woman, see Rev. 2:20) and he began to serve Baal and worship him. Ahab practiced things so detestable and set up false priests and prophets, so that God called special men to prophesy in order to rescue His people. Into our story walks Elijah. Elijah is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise ugly world. This world that the evil kings of Israel infested and the terrible way they flaunted their willful, stubborn and selfish behavior in front of God.  Elijah is a true man of God and he is the first of a string of some very strong prophets God sends to Israel and Judah.

Elijah tells Ahab that there will be a drought in Israel that will last for several years. Here’s kind of an interesting fact, Baal is the god who brings rain. Remember the plagues against Egypt? Nothing different here. God confronts His enemies head on. So Elijah bravely confronts Ahab and then goes into hiding.

There’s a beautiful story of faith and trust that follows with the widow of Zarephath and her son.

Three years have passed and no rain, no water. I wonder where the mighty Baal is? (Ok that was sarcastic). Elijah calls out Ahab and the prophets of Baal. A big show-down occurs and God is triumphant. All the priests of Baal are killed it starts to pour rain and Jezebel is not a happy camper (to say the least). Scary woman that Jezebel. The question we need to ask ourselves in light of this victory for Elijah is how can we stand against the evil in our land? What do we need to do?

Elijah runs and hides and feels like he alone is the only true prophet left of God. God reveals Himself to Elijah on Mount Horeb, not in a violent wind or earthquake or fire, but in a soft voice, a whisper.

God does not always reveal Himself to us in earthshattering ways (although He can and does) but many times we hear the voice of God in subtle, quiet ways. The comfort for me is knowing that God is always near, even if we don’t always feel that way. Most of the time I recognized that it is me who is not quieting myself enough to hear God.

So I hope that in the middle of very stressful days, when the noise level around us seems off the charts, you will be able to step back and quiet yourself so that you can hear God’s whispers to you.

Blessings on the day
