1 Kings 1 – 2, Psalms 37, 71, 94

King David is dying and who will succeed him? Many want to wear the royal crown, but only the one that God chooses is the rightful heir.

David’s family has fought and hurt and cheated and killed (even raped) each other. Not exactly the family anyone would wish for. It is easy to see the struggles we create when we step away from God, when we try to do things on our own, for our own selfish reasons. David’s sons knew who he had selected to be his successor, but now Adonijah wants to be King and so he gets a group of followers to make this proclamation. There is only one problem, the true king is still alive and is capable of naming who will succeed him to the throne. He does just that, he names Solomon, his son with Bathsheba, to be the next king of Israel.

I find it so hard to understand this lust for power and control, yet it hits people in power and position so strongly that often, even strong religious leaders, good Christian men and women, fall prey to its enticement.

Even Solomon (with all his wisdom) will also forget who is the one in control and draw farther and farther away from God. This is a fear that I know many share, that we will too many times try to do things in our own power and in our own strength, rather than relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to lead us.

Well, things don’t end well and I wonder if David could have prevented some of the troubles from happening if he would have addressed them in the beginning. (look at vs 5 &6) “

Adonijah was the son of David and Haggith. He was Absalom’s younger brother and was very handsome. One day, Adonijah started bragging, “I’m going to make myself king!” So he got some chariots and horses, and he hired fifty men as bodyguards. David did not want to hurt his feelings, so he never asked Adonijah why he was doing these things.”

(CEV).

It is why it is so important for us to not try to ignore problems, they will only grow into bigger problems. Praying for peace in our families
